Don’t Hard Water Spots on Cars Make you Crazy?

Hard water spots on my car make me crazy! How about you?

Hard Water Spots on Car

I wouldn’t pay too much attention to it if I lived in an area with soft water, but like most of the country hard water is a big problem in my area. If I leave those nasty little spots on my car they could damage the paint and possibly even the windshield. Crazy, huh?

It’s best to remove hard water spots on cars quickly. Don’t let them stay on there too long. They can be especially damaging in the summer when the weather is hot.

Some reports say the calcium and magnesium that make the water hard will damage the paint on your car by etching into it. Others say that the minerals just harden on the car and ruin the clearcoat finish on it.

But never fear. There are ways to protect yourself from hard water spots on cars whether they come from rain, a nearby sprinkler or the carwash.

Protect your car from hard water spots

The best thing you can do is to protect your car with a good quality wax so that the hard water spots won’t be able to damage your car. Prevention is the best way to treat this problem. If it’s too late for that and you already have hard water spots on cars there are a couple of things you can try:

Vinegar

It seems to like vinegar is the first thing people think of when they have any kind of hard water problem. Hard water spots on cars are no different.

Make a solution using 1 part white vinegar and 1 part distilled water. You do not want to make the problem worse by using tap water since that’s what caused the problem in the first place.

Spray the solution onto the spots and let it set for about 10 minutes. Wash the car again to remove the solution. Dry the car. This works for some people but it can cause the wax on your car to look a bit dull.

Buffer

Some hard water spots on cars are a little more difficult to remove. The longer they remain on the car the harder they are to remove as a general rule.

If the spots are stubborn you may need to wax and buff your car in order to remove the hard water spots. You will need a high quality wax to achieve this as well as a high speed buffer. Take care that you don’t damage the finish with the buffer.
